Symptoms of a pinched nerve
Nerves travel all throughout your body, sending signals to and from the brain. When you have a pinched or compressed nerve, your body sends a warning signal to the brain that something is wrong. Don’t ignore the message, as a damage from a pinched nerve can potentially cause long-lasting issues, such as lingering nerve damage.
Identifying a pinched nerve is often pretty simple. The major symptom, of course, is pain. In fact, pain may be the only thing you notice. It can manifest as a sharp sensation, like pins and needles or a burning feeling. However, it is possible to have a pinched nerve with little to no pain at all; what you may feel instead could be a numbness or tingling sensation. Weakness, especially when making certain movements, is another common symptom.
Symptoms of a slipped disc
The spinal column is made of 26 bones that are separated and cushioned by discs, which protect the bones from shocks like walking and jumping. Each disc has a tough, outer ring and a soft, inner core. When the inner portion of the disc protrudes through the outer ring, you have what is known as a slipped, or herniated, disc.
A herniated disc causes pain in the spinal region that extends to various areas of your back. It can also manifest as numbness, and it usually happens on one side of the body. Slipped discs often cause pain that worsens at night or after standing or sitting for extended periods. Unexplained muscle weakness and tingling or aching in the back are also indicators of this condition.
Symptoms of muscle spasms
When your muscles become tight, clenched, and painful, you likely have what is commonly called a muscle spasm, also known as a cramp. There are many causes, but this condition is essentially an involuntary contraction of the muscle. Spasms can occur all throughout the body, including the feet, legs, abdomen, back, and arms.
The symptoms will vary depending on the muscles affected, but you’ll likely experience a tight sensation and feel a hardness in the muscle. Sometimes a muscle spasm will last only a few seconds, while others can linger for minutes. Muscle twitching is also associated with spasms.
